Creating Film Photography with the LUCH Films App

In the new digital world, to transform mobile photography into an art object, one can use a multitude of applications for editing shots. Some might say that real photography doesn't need editing tools, and that a mobile phone camera cannot convey the warmth that arises from viewing a film photograph. I partially agree, but it's important to acknowledge that technology is deeply intertwined with our lives. It's a natural progression and a continuation of human evolution. In the past, people also resorted to various manipulations during the photo development process. Photographers used non-standard development, and like today, they shot with light filters.

What People Love

In an attempt to understand what the modern photography enthusiast is missing, we began by analyzing social networks, particularly mobile photography. We found that people still love film and everything associated with it. They apply light flare effects, use filters that imitate film. The trend is growing every year. More and more filter applications are appearing in the App Store, but 90% are created with the sole purpose of extracting as much money from users as possible.

What We Do

At Artcoast studio, we pay great attention to user interaction with the app. We test usage scenarios, play with color and shape of objects. Before a product appears in the app store, it goes through a long journey from sketches in a notebook, to design in Figma and Xcode.

We've also painstakingly developed LUCH, a new app that allows you to turn regular snapshots taken on a mobile phone camera into photos with film effects.

What we added to LUCH:

  • Noise, scratches, and dust. To give the photographs an effect of wear and aging.

  • Filters, which we adjusted for several weeks and selected the best options that are relevant in 2020.

  • Light flares.

  • Bokeh effects and light refraction in a prism effect.

  • Film frames.

  • Two main formats on Instagram: Stories and Feed.

  • iPad support.
